Understanding Website VisitorsUnderstanding visitor behavior on your website is of imperative performance if you want to make sure that your website keeps working for you. After all instead of increasing the number of people that are coming to your website, why not just increase your conversion rate of the people that are already there?  Improving your conversion rates by just small percentages can have a tremendous impact on your business.

Many people view looking at reports as boring, but truly this is where you can see how your visitors are interacting with your website and then you can take action to improve the results. So, what are some tools you can use to see what’s going on? Let’s take a look:

  1. GetResponse - It’s not only a direct e-mail drip campaign tool. From the reporting features you can see how many people are reading your e-mails and how many people are unsubscribing. This way you can see if your headlines are working! WOW :)
  2. CrazyEgg - Crazy Egg is a great tool that is actually FREE (for tracking of 4 pages) and can show you what people are clicking on your individual pages. Think of it as an enhancement to Google Analytics as you get specific information on the keyword information on a click by click basis. CrazyEgg tests live so you will be able to see your reports updated throughout the day.
  3. Google Analytics - Formerly urchin, this software is amazing and they continue to upgrade it. Detailed keyword information, tracking of goals, and more. Definitely a must have.  You can track all of your websites from one source and comparing your reports to different time periods is very easy.
  4. ClickTale - See how a visitor is behaving on your website. You will literally see a playback of the mouse movements. We have used it to see if pages were too long or if the links we had on pages weren’t obvious enough for people to keep on clicking throughout the site.

Taking the time to put in these tools and monitor them will help you to maximize your conversion rates.  Remember you don’t want to take just one look at the data, look through the different reports so you can get a really good understanding of how visitors are arriving at your website and what they do once they arrive.  Take it step by step and test your improvements on each and every page. Have fun!
