So you have started blogging but you aren’t sure what or why people would visit your blog. In real estate we sometimes forget about the time before we did real estate and what it was like to be a current home owner, potential home owner, or a new landlord without a rolodex full of contacts and education to help us solve our every day real estate challenges. If you want people to continue to visit your blog for more than just the latest listing, free CMA tool, and MLS then you need to make sure that your real estate blog is a source of information. Resources are precious and highly sought after. Your Blog Needs to be a Precious ResourceYou want to make sure that your information is precious and sought after by others. In fact I would say that you need to make sure you become THE source for information in your area. You want people to e-mail, talk about, and mention your blog anytime someone needs information about real estate in your area. Now this may be too big for you to do for your entire city but you can certainly accomplish this for your area of town that you really like to work in. So let’s cover 5 ways you can make your blog a resource for all current and potential home owners.

5 Ways You Can Make Your Blog a Precious Resource

  1. Have a Referral area of your blog – if you are using blog software that allows you to add pages to it such as wordpress or typepad make sure that you have a referral area. List your preferred choices for carpet, tile, termite, and other home services. You want to attract buyers and sellers who need your services tomorrow as well as today. You may even be able to get some of these people to help you contribute to your blog or pay for ad space on your blog.
  2. Blog About Different Topics – Of course you are going to blog about different topics but topics landlords care about and current home owners care about. Become a resource for ideas for home improvements and where to get books or documents that will help owners.
  3. Keep it update to date regularly – we have mentioned this many times before but the more you can keep a blog up to date the more reasons people will want to “tune in” to you. If you update your blog every day there are more reasons for people to “tune in”. I wouldn’t recommend starting with a once a day goal but having a goal to get to that would be great. After all how many people would read a newspaper if it where only updated once a week?
  4. Don’t promote yourself – Libraries don’t promote themselves they promote what they offer and you offer information. You will become the source for information but stay away from mentioning your awards or achievements and focus on what is important to the consumer.
  5. Encourage community participation – contact community groups and encourage them to promote their activities on your blog free of charge. Give them a voice on your blog and you will have someone helping you, which makes it easier to keep things up to date.

Remember that you want your blog to be a destination. A place where people in your community can come, “hang out”, and find the information that they not only need but that they enjoy. You possess very valuable information and sharing it makes you and your blog a valuable resource. To Your Success Online!
