Keywords truly form the foundation of both blogs and real estate websites.  In order for our blogs and websites to be found they need to be rich with the content that people are actually searching for. Your content should be well written and the search engine determines what the page is about by “looking” at the page and seeing the different “keywords” that compose the page.  Now, there are a couple of basic ways you can find out what people are searching on out there.  Here are 2 of my favorite:

  1. Ask People! - Yes ask your sphere of influence this “if you didn’t know me as your real estate professional of choice, what would you type in Google to find someone to help you with your real estate needs?”  You will be amazed at the responses and yes this is valid to count as keyword research.
  2. WordTracker (or another word research tool) - WordTracker is certainly my favorite as it is a top tool used by many SEO professionals and I have been using it for a few years now.  It gives you access to some of the major search engine data on what people are searching on.

Now, these may 2 very common ways to find out what people are typing to find websites, but there is actually another way that is often overlooked.  I know it may sound crazy at first, but here we go:

LOOK AT YOUR OWN WEBSITE

I know it’s crazy, if you look at your own website, you can actually see what people might be typing to find out about real estate in your area.  Now, you don’t need x-ray vision, you just need the web reporting tool that comes with your website.  We use Google Analytics on all of our websites because it’s powerful, and yes, it’s FREE

For Google Analytics, you would look at the section entitled Traffic Sources –>Keywords.  This will show you what keywords people are typing to find your website.  The results often amaze me as I find new words each month that I didn’t anticipate.  Here is an example of a few keywords that surprised me. Keywords from Analytics

I had written just 1 page about the area of El Dorado Park real estate here in Long Beach, yet I found 4 other keywords that people had used that I didn’t anticipate.  So what can you do with these new found keywords?

  1. Write More Content! - Yes, create some new real estate website content focused on these new keywords.  Maybe the visitors don’t stay around long enough because they didn’t find “estate” information, so you can add more to help them.
  2. Add them to your Google Adwords - If you are running Google Ads, you might want to create some new focused ads with these new keywords and direct them to the new pages you create.

The nice part is you can do this trick every month, because each month you will find some new words!  Its fun and you don’t have to pay for any fancy tools. If you want more help knowing how to write power packed content, try out real estate website content system.
