Cross Country

In high school I was a cross country and track runner.  In fact my twin brother and I ran cross-country all 4 years.  The best coach we ever had for cross country was a gentleman by the name of Carter Yarborough.  He really had a passion for the sport; in fact, he enjoyed it so much he actually donated his time to coach us.

Before the summer of our senior year he asked us what times we wanted to achieve for our races in the upcoming season.  Being as it was our final year we had some aggressive goals (16:30 for myself and 16:40 for my brother were our goals for the 5k).  He wrote each of our times down in a book and then proceeded to outline what we would do for the summer to achieve our goals.  How did we do on our goals?  I will get to that in a minute.

Thinking about how Carter made sure to ask us what our goals were before he put a plan in place made me think about how we look at our real estate websites and blogs.  Many real estate professionals out there are charging ahead, but do they know their goals for their online presence?

So what are some goals that you might want to think about for your website or blog?  Here are some thoughts and I will give you some quick action items so you can hit your goal by the end of the season.

  1. How many visitors to your website or blog each month do you want?
  2. How many leads to you want to generate from your website or blog?
  3. How many people do you want to help just from your blog or website?

These 3 simple goals will help you focus your efforts and if you write down where you are today, you can see at the end of the year how far you have come.  Here are some simple action items (your training) for each item so you can hit your goals.

  1. To get more visitors you need lots of content for people to find.  Try setting a goal of creating new pages for your website and a set number of blog posts you will do each month.
  2. Getting leads is more than just about getting more people to your website.  To really get the maximum number of leads from your visitors you need to look at how your website and blog convert traffic.  Look at each page on your website to make sure you have powerful calls to action on every page.
  3. Here is where the rubber meets the road.  Hitting the number of people you want to help will largely depend on your phone and e-mail skills (note: no technology here) so brush up on your buyer scripts and be prepared to keep in touch with some people via e-mail.  Set a goal of the number of calls you will make each week and stick to it.

The art of goal setting isn’t anything new, but setting some goals specifically around your presence online can bring you some new found focus.  The year is just half over and summer is upon us so get your training in gear to hit your targets.

Oh, how did we do on our running goals?  I ran 16:22 and my brother (working through an injury) ran 16:48 so goal setting really can work :).
