As we are teaching in different cities we still frequently run into real estate agents who haven’t started a blog yet.  Now, that’s not really the part I find surprising.  Real estate has traditionally been a bit slow in adopting technology so I certainly understand the often slow rate for this industry to use new tools.  What I do find surprising though are the reasons that people find NOT to start blogging. Here are some of the most common ones that we have heard:

  1. I don’t write well enough to have a blog
  2. What if no one reads my blog?
  3. I don’t know what to write about
  4. It costs too much

Really?

If these are in your mind we are going to go through each one right now, so that you can break the barrier of fear and enter the world of real estate blogging.

I don’t write well enough to have a blog

Here is a tip, you really don’t have to write well to have a blog!  Last time I checked the Pulitzer Prize committee does not have a category for bloggers so I wouldn’t worry about being judged on your writing skills.  The reality is that you can write at a 5th grade level, just like newspapers, and have an extremely successful real estate blog.  If you are still a little scared to start, I would recommend going over to CopyBlogger as they focus on posts to help bloggers write great posts and give some wonderful techniques to use.

What if no one reads my blog?

Now, I would like to say that every time you dropped off something to your farm that the potential seller just vigorously read every line of your “market report” but the reality is many of them went straight into the trash can.  The reality is that people will read your blog and many others still won’t.  Concentrate on the fact that you can write some great information that will help a few and don’t worry about who it doesn’t reach!

I don’t know what to write about

This is always the most shocking one for me.  If I ask any real estate professional about the benefits of the area they work, they can give me a dissertation, but open up a screen to type and they have nothing to say?  Quite simply, just communicate your expertise!

Whether you are new in the business or experienced you can share your perspective with the world.  If you really do run short on ideas, try Mary McKnight’s post on 365 Real Estate Blog Ideas and then you really don’t have an excuse.

It costs too much

Operating a real estate blog is one of the most cost effective ways to actively market for your real estate business.  The reality is that you can start a blog for FREE!  Yes there are some great vendors out there who charge for blogs, but you might want to just get started with a free one to see if you will stick with it.  So you don’t have to look anywhere try the following:
