Fight the fight you can winHave you ever wondered what it would be like to be the most dominate boxer of all time? Think about facing Muhammad Ali in his prime. Would you even stand a chance at beating him? This is a fight that you should never pick and this would be a fight that Muhammad Ali would be guaranteed to win.

You would never want to face Muhammad Ali in the ring as it would only end with you getting hurt and Muhammad Ali taking home another check. Many real estate agents give up on placing ads on with pay per click advertising because they get in a fight they can’t possibly win. They are effectively fighting against Muhammad Ali instead of becoming Muhammad Ali themselves. How can we turn ourselves into lean, mean, Google pay per click machines? We have to fight the fight we can win that’s how!

Let’s cover the fight that you can’t win so you know how to look for it. I am not saying you won’t eventually get to fighting the big title fight of your Google Adwords career but you have to train to ge there.

The easiest words to think of are the ones that the big companies will advertise on driving up the cost of the words.

Examples:

  • Palo Alto Real Estate
  • Palos Verdes Real Estate
  • Beverly Hills Real estate
  • [City Name] Real Estate

It isn’t hard to come up with these words to advertise on and large companies like Realtor.com, Trulia, and Homegain will most certainly be placing ads on these terms and their budget is probably slightly bigger than yours. For some of the above examples I know agents who compete directly with Homegain and are paying as much as $25 per click. Now if you have an efficient website you might be able to make that work but it is definitely not something I would recommend someone advertising on until they know what their cost per conversion is.

So now you know what you shouldn’t start with so where do you start advertising on if all of the “easy” words are already taken?

Start with words and phrases(keywords) that describe neighborhoods, developments, areas, and communities.

Examples:

  • Harlan Ranch - a master planned community in Fresno, CA. I typed this in and there were 0, that’s right 0, paid ads!
  • Casa De Oro Homes - this is an area in Spring Valley, CA. There were only three ads when I typed this in. Just by putting your ad up you have a 1 in 4 chance of being clicked on.
  • West Side Santa Cruz Homes - This is an area right near the water in Santa Cruz. There were only two advertisers and one was Move.com. Now that is a wide open market.

The same expertise that you have in real estate is the same expertise that will make you a success with pay per click advertising. Don’t think in general terms. After all you help people buy or sell one house, on one street, in one neighborhood. Use that same expertise to write your Google Adwords ads and you will be rewarded.
