Use Trulia Voices at your own riskI have one question for everyone “Would you rather build equity in your own asset or that of someone else?“.  Think about your answer and also note this is the same question we ask many would be first time home buyers so they can see that renting is only building wealth for someone else.

So if you would rather be the owner instead of the renter why do so many real estate agents flock to Trulia voices? Trulia is an aggregator of real estate listings(the ones real estate professionals work so hard to get) and can be found at www.Trulia.com. They offer features for real estate professionals for free right?

Sure they are free but they are at the cost of building wealth for investors in Trulia and not you the real estate professional. You see by commenting on Trulia voices you are extending the reach of Trulia on the Internet. They say they are helping your business and in some degree they are but their business is being helped tremendously more by you building their market share on the Internet.

I have heard the objections to not using Trulia maybe you have as well:

  • It is free
  • It is easy
  • People already know Trulia

Ok fair enough. I tell you what blogger.com is also free and is also easy. You can also get nearly free blogs at www.WordPress.com. These are sites that you can build your own piece of digital real estate on and create your own presence.

Let’s get to that last one “People already know Trulia.”. Do they? I know what the stats say as far as market. Trulia is in fact at number 11 of the top real estate websites on the Internet according to the Hitwise rankings.

So they are in the top 11 so many people do use them but do an informal survey in your area and of your customers and you will find that just as many people don’t know them as do know them. In fact I would bet most don’t actually know who they are except for real estate professionals.

Am I saying you shouldn’t do anything with Trulia? That is up to you but I would spend more time on my own pieces of digital real estate websites before I invested any time and effort with Trulia or move.com. I can tell you from personal experience our team has made far more from our own efforts then we ever have from Trulia or realtor.com.

Just ask yourself do you want to be the renter or the owner? Whichever one works for you is what you have to decide. Just remember that if you want to stay in the real estate business for a length of time it is nicer to be the one setting the rules instead of the one who has the rules dictated to them.
