Dane Cook, comedian & Master Social NetworkerWhat can a comedian teach real estate agents about social networking? He can teach all of us quite a bit. Dane Cook may be more known for his stand-up comedy, roles in movies, and just being really funny but he was and is an early adopter of social networking.

In particular Dane Cook is social networker with his website at myspace. Many people are familiar with myspace and attribute it only to teens having fun, putting up pictures, and watching videos. Myspace is much more than that and Dane Cook proves that.

The Master Social Networker

Dane Cook used myspace to propel his career and create a fan base that is loyal to him and his comedy. He didn’t wait for one of the large networks to come calling and to manage his career for him he took charge of all of his own marketing and built a marketing machine around himself and his brand of comedy. Dane’s page at myspace can be found at http://www.myspace.com/danecook. The key is that Dane didn’t wait he took action.

The Excuses That Agents Use For Not Creating a Social Network

Let’s face it we have all heard or even made the excuses about creating a social network. Let’s cover a few of them and realize that we need to overcome them in order to be successful. Have you ever heard any of these questions or thought them to yourself?

  • How many real estate agents do you know that “wait for their company” to take care of them?
  • How many real estate agents believe that is the company they work for that is the reason for their success?

Don’t wait for your real estate company to take care of you take charge and control of your own marketing and use social networking to build a network and a following that will stay with you regardless of the company that you are with.

How Dane Cook Built His Social Network

On an HBO Special series Tourgasm, that featured Dane Cook he was speaking to another comedian about the early days of his career. He mentioned how he was willing to work any gig (I think everyone in real estate can relate to willing to work on anything). Since he couldn’t afford anyone for marketing he started with an AOL chat name and a single page website. He would make sure to just mention his website when he spoke. He said it started with 1 guy after a show who started chatting to him online via AOL chat. He spent 45 minutes chatting online with a fan.

Dane Cook took this and just keep adding friends via AOL and eventually on myspace where he now has 2,405,812 friends(as of this post). Now that is a network that Dane Cook can count on! Dane in fact used that network to get through to Hollywood executives when they asked what kind of following his has.

Dane asked the executive if he could borrow his computer and Dane logged into his website. Needless to say the computer crashed with all of the requests that were coming in to speak with Dane. Think if you had a network that you could count on to tell your next prospective buyer or prospective seller how great you are to work with? Wouldn’t that make it easier to get more listings and help more buyers?

How You Can Do Exactly What Dane Cook Did For Yourself

Not many of us have the humor and charisma that Dane Cook has but you can most certainly take his approach to social networking. Dane didn’t start with a big budget he started with his own time and some networking and you can do the same.

To have success with social networking you have to start and you have to be willing to contribute. Some of the social networking sites that are extremely popular and will provide a great place to meet new people are as follows:

Start Taking Action to Build Your Social Network

Don’t worry about not finding even one person you know on these social networking websites. There will be more people then you thought would be on there. Start with the people know first who you have e-mails.

I listed each of my profiles on each of the sites above and would be happy to add you to my network. Often times it starts with just having one person you know and I am happy to be one of the first people you know in your social network. My brother, James View James Bridges's LinkedIn profileView James Bridges’s profile, who is also an author here, will be happy to be an additional part of your network. So you see you already know two people guaranteed to be in your network.

We each have something to offer and creating a social network is a great place to help others and to increase the number of people who will want to use you for real estate advice.
