Dinosaur in JungleI was watching Jurassic Park last weekend and oddly enough it reminded me of real estate. These powerful animals roamed the earth for millions of years, yes with some evolution, but with little change.  Eventually, as we know, the dinosaurs became extinct.  Sadly, I don’t think there is a John Hammond out there working on bringing them back either.  Some died in the tar pits while others could NOT adapt to an environment that radically changed.

We have been experiencing some radical change in real estate from changing market conditions to finally a greater reliance on technology. Yet even with these dramatic environmental changes occurring I still see many agents unwilling to embrace the change.  Whether it’s through fear, or just the misguided hope that it will “go back to normal” they staunchly resist the new normal.

What am I talking about?

Let’s see, what are some of the old habits that agents are still holding on to?

  • Door knocking
  • Cold Calling
  • Open Houses
  • Farming

I can safely say the agents embracing these habits are headed the way of the dinosaurs.  In fact, I doubt I will even get a single comment on this post from them because they aren’t even looking to change!

So, how do you change instead of head to extinction?

Whether you are a newbie or a seasoned veteran of real estate you must be prepared for change if you are going to thrive in real estate.  Here are some of the skills you can concentrate on to see some serious results.

  • Real Estate Website - It’s no longer an option and it certainly isn’t just a digital ad. You must now make your website rich with content so it can become a true destination. Make it worthy of earning a precious bookmark from a visitor and you will have more business than you can handle.
  • Blog - Hear the voice of your community with posts that are engaging and that stimulate conversation.  If you can provide information that compels new visitors to subscribe and crave for more you will dominate your area.
  • Social Networking - Once relegated to teenagers it is becoming a powerful networking tool.  Professionals on FaceBook and LinkedIn are helping each other to succeed, so don’t be left out.
  • Video - Once thought to be a medium that allowed people to distract themselves from work, it is now a legitimate format to provide real information. Start a channel on YouTube and build a following of loyal subscribers that will support you in your business.

Attitude

The list above may look daunting but don’t let it scare you.  One of my favorite quotes is from Sir Winston Churchill.  He said:

“Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm.”

I take it as there may be some trial and error as you attempt new challenges.  Realize that thriving and surviving will require an attitude that is strong in the face of failure.  Failure is merely a lesson and step that helps us get to greater successes!  In fact as you try these new techniques maybe you find that your YouTube channel works better for you than social networking; that’s OK!  Find what works and run with it.

The key is not to get stuck in the tar pits and be prepared to adapt to this NEW environment.
