Win the crowd, win your freedom
These famous words were spoken by Proximo (Oliver Reed) to Maximus (Russel Crowe) in the movie Gladiator. Maximus was a magnificent Gladiator, but he made the kills to quickly and did not embrace the crowd. Proximo was trying to teach Maximus the lesson that if he embraced the crowd, got them to cheer for him to be their champion, then maybe, just maybe he would win his freedom.
As we know from the story it took Maximus time to realize the art of the fight that would win the crowd. At first he was surprised at the crowd’s reactions, then as he developed he recognized the crowd could be of value to him. From this tragic hero we see that the crowd can help us in ways we would not expect.
Winning the Crowd
When we start to blog or write pages we often take the approach that Maximus did in his early fights. We write a small post and then quickly throw up our call to action. Our visitors aren’t impressed because anyone could give them a call to action, but where is the show?
Giving our visitors a story to get behind will help us to win them. Give your readers a rich picture of what they would experience in your neighborhood that is so rich they feel as if they are physically walking down the street looking at their next home. It doesn’t have to be over the top, but take the time to describe it as if there weren’t any pictures and your words will most certainly feel like they jump off the page.
Win your Freedom
Many of us started in real estate for the “freedom”. Freedom to be our own boss, freedom to do what we wanted, etc. Then as we got deeper in we were often trapped by looking for that “next deal”. Building stories that win the crowd will enable you to win your freedom in ways you didn’t expect.
- Loyal Following - The crowd will be anxious to read your next blog post so they will subscribe. They will want to cheer you on (comments) on each and every post so give them something to scream about.
- Telling others - As you become famous, like that of Maximus, they will tell their friends to subscribe to your blog and your fame will continue to grow.
- Freedom - You won’t have to worry about finding that next deal, because your loyal following will be championing your cause all across town. They will turn up people for you to help because they have found you to be the one they cheer for and they want their friends and family members to have a true champion.
Perhaps our stories online won’t be as dramatic as Maximus taking down Commodus, but maybe we can still get the crowd to cheer from us. Every time you click “Publish” you are sharing your voice with the world. Your local community is craving for your voice so give them a story they can get behind and they will reward you. If you are selfish and just go for the “kill” to early though your fate may be one where the stadium is empty.
