Grocery bag on side spilling groceriesFor many that start with traditional real estate training, some of the first things that you learn about are methods such as farming and getting in touch with your “sphere of influence”.  With both of these methods you learn that you must stay in touch with them on a consistent basis so you can be at the forefront of their minds when it comes time for a real estate need.  Keeping a consistent touch will enable your sphere and farm to send you business month in and month out.

The funny part is the same method of consistent touches comes in to play for the search engines as well and will also result in business month in and month out.  Since we can’t send Google a newsletter or knock on their door, how do we stay in touch with them consistently?

  1. Create New Pages - Consistently creating new pages for your website is one of the best ways you can stay in touch with the search engines.  The more regularly you update your website the more regularly the search engine will check in with you to see what is new on your website.  With these regular checks they will be able to send you more visitors because they can find more great content to share with people as they search.
  2. Update your Sitemap - We have written about sitemaps before, but they are one of the best ways you can let the search engines know about all of the pages on your website.  When you put up new pages, it’s a good idea to update your XML Sitemap as well as the HTML Sitemap on your site.  This is an easy way to keep the search engines in the loop on what is going on with your website.
  3. Blog it Out - Blogging about the new information on your website is a great way to let search engines know about your new content.  As the search engine “reads” your blog it will follow the link to your new content and see that another site is also aware of fresh new information.

Start small

Looking at just these 3 items can seem a bit daunting, but it really doesn’t have to be.  Write out 5 headlines of pages that you want to create and then plan to write just 1 new page a week.  Once you get past the first page, you will find that you can quickly create new pages for your website.  Most of the pages that we create for our websites take no longer than 30-40 minutes and they end up “living” for as long as we pay our server bill.  Much longer than that postcard you took so much time to design.  Make your new page goal small and you will certainly stick with the regular updates.

Keep the focus

Just like keeping in touch with your sphere requires some work, so is true with the search engines.  Just focusing on the 3 methods above will lead to more traffic and more leads from your website.
