Snoop Dogg with LBCSnoop Dogg has always represented “cool” in the music industry.  I am not just saying this because he hails from Long Beach and that is where our real estate team operates, but truly Snoop is the epitome of cool.  Snoop always comes off as cool for a few simple reasons:

  • He makes up words - If you have ever listened to an interview or the lyrics of a rap song by Snoop you already know.  He brought to the main stream phrases like “fo shizzle” and “fo sheezy”.  He didn’t try to define these words, but he made it clear what they meant through the usage.  Even better, when the words got to the point of being over used, he ditched them!
  • He doesn’t care what you think - Some would argue that since he sells albums and concert tickets that he certainly must care what people think, yet he consistently chooses his own path against popular opinion.  Yet despite this path of not bowing to popular opinion he continues to achieve huge success.
  • He has changed with the times - His songs with Dr. Dre on The Chronic album are some of my favorite all time, yet his sound now is much different than those famed 1992 hits.  He has progressed as an artist and has created a new style in each album.  A style that many try to copy yet to no avail.

If Snoop were doing consulting for real estate blogs, I think he would call quite a few bloggers out.  Many of the posts out there in the real estate blog land are just sad, and he would most certainly see them as just sad haters.  So, exactly how should we make sure that we aren’t just posers and actually bring some real game to the blogosphere?

  1. Define your market - Sometimes that may mean making up words!  Define your market in your words, not what the local news says.  Share the names of those niche neighborhoods that only very few even know the boundaries for.  You then take the lead on what will be popular.
  2. Don’t care what people think- Seriously, say what you want, your blog is your voice.  If you are hesitating before hitting the “publish” button you are probably on the right track.  If you think the market is bad, then say so, but support it with more than just your opinion.  Give a different angle on the data and show your visitors you aren’t afraid to go against the norm.  Remember in every market people buy and sell, but you need to get to those people who have REAL needs.
  3. Change with the times- Your market changes every day so be aware of what’s going on.  It can’t always be sunny and beautiful (OK, maybe in San Diego :) ), but really be prepared to update your posts and even the way your blog looks over time.  It shows that you value your readership enough to bring them the latest styles and keep them on the edge.

You don’t have to be a master on the Mic to appreciate Snoop or even learn how he can help your blog.  Just take the time to share your voice and don’t be afraid of what everyone else tells you won’t work.  Chances are they haven’t tried to push the edge and pretty soon their blog will be collecting some dust.
