What type of social networker are you?Social networking has been growing and growing in popularity for the last several years but people are still figuring things out from a standpoint of making it actually productive. One of the reasons that people have issues with social networking is there forget about the word “work” in networking. Everyone seems to get the point that you can be social but as far as the working part that gets overlooked.

I believe that you should do social networking so you can help others, grow your business, and get help when the time comes. The problem comes in when you aren’t a well balanced social networker. So what kind of social networker are you?

There tend to be two types of social networkers who have issues with social networking. Being too far in either of these groups will cause you to not only not get referrals but may hurt or even kill your social network.

That’s right you know this person. All they do is social networking. They are on twitter, facebook, linkedin, myspace, and putting up 12 blog posts a day on stuff you have no idea about. In fact you wonder if they have ever sold a home or are selling any homes because of their involvement in social networking. They are always updating with all of their “good times” they are having but don’t really seem interested in actually doing any work or at least that is how it appears from their updates.

Have you ever met somebody for the first time and within 30 seconds they are trying to cram a business card at you? All they every talk about is how you can help them and send them business and they never ever bother to as you how they can help you? It seems like the only thing they are focused on is helping themselves. This social networker quickly erodes any kind of help they are going to get because they never help anyone but themselves.

The Ultimate Social Networker

Being good at online social networking is no different than being good at real life networking. It is a give and take relationship. My brother and I have a great friend who not only is a real estate investor but is in Hollywood and works routinely doing voice overs and work with the biggest names in showbiz. Does he have a famous last name? He does not. He has made it and continues to do so because he has a very solid social network. He doesn’t just take he gives. In fact he gives more than he takes so when he needs to ask for a favor he can get things done.

So if you want to be a social networker that gets referrals, gets results, and can ask people for help you need to help people first and put some effort into your social networker.

The buddy that my brother and I have spent part of his earnings(and still does) on “Thank you gifts” to those that hired him early on in his career. It was always accustomed with a note of gratitude for hiring him on the project. When people have the power to choose anyone they want, as it does in his industry as well as ours, always being at the top of the list is extremely important.

Am I telling you to send gifts to people in your social network? Well it wouldn’t hurt but that isn’t the point. A simple(and personal) “thank you”, “How are you doing”, “is there anything I can do for you”, and “happy birthday” messages are a great way to build repor and help others.
