As the new year approaches and you make plans for your online marketing efforts, one of them surely is creating more pages for your website or blog.  Your plan may be detailed, outlined weekly, or one that has a simple goal of adding “X” number of pages and posts.  One of the main problems of sticking to that plan is the actual creation of content for those pages.

The excuses for avoiding creating new website content are numerous: “I don’t have time”, “I don’t know what to write about” , “No one reads it anyway”!  Rather than dwell on the negative, I thought it would be best if you had some tips on how to make creating new content a fun process that’s easy and that will still draw the attention of your visitors and search engines alike!

  1. Pick a topic you like- Don’t get distracted with the most dominant keyword in your area, just pick a topic that you really enjoy.  This could be a particular neighborhood, a style of architecture, or really anything in real estate that grabs your interest.  Picking a topic that you like will make it easy to write on.  In fact, if your website or blog is newer (under 2 years) you really can pick almost only topics you like to write on and you will have plenty of pages and posts for the year.
  2. Use bullet points - Using bullet points on your pages and posts makes the pages look longer without you having to write more copy and it makes it easy for your customers to see key points that you are trying to make.  This can be a great place to highlight a keyword or key feature of an area that you are always asked about.
  3. Don’t worry what people think- I know it sounds crazy, but really don’t worry about what people will think when you are writing.  There are no Pulitzer prizes handed out for content on real estate websites so just write naturally and don’t worry what you “sound” like.  Writing as if you were speaking to a customer is just fine and creates a friendly experience that draws in visitors and keeps them there.
  4. Make your call to action obvious - At the end of the day, you want a new prospect and the visitors to your website and blog want THE information, so make it easy on them!  If you are writing content that buyers would like make your calls to action obvious like “Get the listings in the area now” or “Search the MLS for this neighborhood for FREE”.  Making links like this large and obvious is a great way for your visitors to quickly get the information they need from you and for you to get a new lead!
  5. Use a picture or video - Real estate is an extremely visual buying experience so let people see what they are looking to purchase.  These are easy to get if you just keep your camera with you while you are on broker tour or just take a break in the afternoon and take some pictures of homes or condos in your area.  Taking a few pictures at a time will give you a great library of images to pull from.

One of the keys to a successful plan is making it easy for yourself to stick with it!  A plan doesn’t have to be fancy, it just has to be one that you will continue work with all year long.
