Rodney Dangerfield said it and in real estate we feel it all the time. We feel that our customers never give us any respect. We never get treated the way we want and we just kind of grin and go along with how people treat us.
So how come with put up with it? Rodney made the phrase famous and made it part of just about every bit, movie, and scene that he did. In fact he made it funny to “get no respect”.
Why in real estate though do we put up with how we get treated and how we are viewed by our customers. Now I am not saying that everyone gives us no respect but there are many who rank our industry at the bottom of respectability and that isn’t the greatest thing. I believe that many agents put up with the treatment for one reason, money.
That’s right we all put up with the treatment because we of course need the next transaction to close. We need that deal so badly we are willing to put up with just about anything in order to make the deal close and that includes getting no respect for the work that we do. Well I tell you what I believe that we can all close more business AND get more respect along the way. In fact the more respect you get the more business you will get. So ready to get some respect? I sure hope so.
6 Ways to Get Some Respect
- Dress For Respect - That’s right no more flip flops, untucked t-shirts, and stains on the pants. Dress for success. I am not telling you to spend a fortune but dress for the respect you want. My brother and I dress in slacks and ties every day. That may not be for some but I tell you what I get respect.
- Learn to say no - If you do everything you are asked to do you will get treated like an animal. You want to have great customer service as long as it is related to real estate. If someone asks you to pick up their dry cleaning and you do it you are getting no respect.
- Have rules - The more rules you have the better. That’s right make sure people follow your rules. My brother and I have whole set of rules that buyers have to follow in order to be a client. They respect our time because of it.
- Respect Yourself - If you don’t have any respect for yourself no one will so start respecting yourself and the real estate training you have have taken for more success.
- Know your stuff - Doctors and lawyers get paid because they went through lots of school and they know their stuff. Well most of us in real estate went through the school of hard knocks and learned on the street how to do real estate. So make sure you know what you are talking about and you will get more respect.
- Be on time - Hard to get respect if you aren’t there to receive it. If you make an appointment keep it and be early (5 minutes or so) if you are meeting someone at their home for a listing appointment. If they are coming to your office for a buyers appointment be ready on time but make them wait a minute or two for you in an office.
