Can you make money in real estate without working?
I am being serious here. Many times in real estate I hear people’s goals of 24, 30, 60 or even 100 transactions a year and then I ask them their plan and it is made up of showing up to the office a whole 1 day a week.
Now I am not taking a shot at those who show up every day, prospect, do their marketing, and work real estate I am talking about those who view real estate as a 2 day a week job where you can just make a bunch of money. This past weekend my brother and I were the first ones in the office and the last ones to leave. Some people left to go see the football games that were on and others just never showed up. So that leads to my rant today, “Can you make money in real estate without working?
The short answer is NO (at least in my opinion) but let’s get into things and see if we can discover what the problems are that lead people to believe they can make money without working and maybe even come up with a few things for people to do that dont’ seem like work.
Work is a feared word in the real estate industry
As I write this post my brother and I are in the office of almost 200 agents and it is a Saturday morning and there are only 2 other people here besides us. So you think that some people are at home relaxing while we are working?
So let’s get into why people fear work
- They got into real estate to escape “the man” - They didn’t want to be told what to do anymore so they got into it so they could create their own schedule. Problem is many didn’t develop their own schedule they just decided to get into real estate without a plan.
- They are independent contractors so don’t tell them what to do - Similar to above yet different. Don’t try and give me direction you can’t so just let me do my thing. Problem is that thing is nothing.
- I have to help out at home since I don’t have a “job” - Really? I am not saying not to help out at home but you do have a job it is real estate. Often times spouses see that someone isn’t working (and they aren’t) so they ask for other things to be done and that means even less work is done in real estate.
To be honest we could spend a lifetime discussing all of the problems people have with “work” in real estate so let’s get into a few things that can get you on track and get your goals accomplished.
Make work not work
There are always things that we hate to do but we have to do them in order to make money. Let’s talk about some ways to stay focused.
- You really need to work just 3 hours every day to be successful in real estate - sounds crazy but true. I am not talking about checking up on your files I am talking about booking appointments. My brother can book appointments in 3 minutes (no joke) but he doesn’t always reach people so he has to leave them a voicemail. So when he gets them on the phone it is a slam dunk otherwise he is leaving messages that get them to call him back.
- Lead generation is fun - Write a blog post add a page to your website. All of it adds content that will generate leads for the future.
- Show up to work or don’t show up - Listen when you head to the office don’t go to chit chat go to actually crank out some work. If you don’t it isn’t worth going in to the office.
- Give yourself a reward - Work is tough and if you accomplish a goal give yourself a reward for it. Maybe it is a vacation, maybe a nice dinner, or maybe some new clothes. Set a goal and know that is what you are working for.
- Stick with something - You know the types of agents that purchase a system and then complain that it doesn’t work. Purchase a real estate system and use it. Know that you spent your hard earned money on it and make it work for you.
Work doesn’t have to be work it should be fun or find something else to do. I am serious. If you don’t like it you have two choices: hire someone who will do it for you or don’t do it and get out.

this is the difference between being a salesperson and a business owner. i know people making millions in re that work 16 hours a day, and i know people making the same money who took off almost half the year last year. it all comes down to how you choose to run your business. i don’t think most people even consider the fact that it can be done without killing themselves!

Owning a business is much better. So do you want your business to own you or you your business? Often ones never make a choice on which to aspire or shoot for.
We are talking exactly about that here for people to make a choice of what you are going to do.
