That’s right I said it, embrace work. If you aren’t prepared to build your network then going on facebook, linkedin, twitter, and plaxo is just goofing off. Yes just because you spend time on a social network website doing different tasks doesn’t mean it is work. I am serious about this. If you are going to use social networking to be a valuable part of your business(and it can) you have to have a purpose about it. You must embrace the fact that social networking is the dreaded “work”. To be honest it might just be the most fun that you will have when working but you must still have a purpose, mission, and goal set for your work on social networking websites or you are lying to yourself about how productive you are being.

So what do you need to do to make this an effective system? Well let’s go over some aspects of social networking that will lead to results and by results I am talking about closed real estate sales in your area.

The foundation of “work” on social networking

This list is by no means comprehensive but will serve as a foundation for how you can go about building your network. For those who looked at our new blog (that is only about networking) you will notice that we are building it around getting deals done like they do in Hollywood and like our friend, Marc Jannone, spoke about on the call that he did with us. In fact the affects of the call and the CD are still working as Marc continues to report to us how people are contacting him on his facebook page because of the CD.

Check these items of your list to know you are working

These items mean you are working on your social network and not just goofing off. I am not saying you can’t goof off but make sure you know the difference between working and goofing off.

  1.  You find agents in cities where people relocate to yours from - Always great to introduce yourself to someone who actively works an area that you get clients from. Don’t ask for referrals right away just start by introducing yourself.
  2. You update your status about the work you are doing- If you are having fun with twitter or facebook on the status you are updating fine but that is in my “goofing off” category. If you are telling people what you are doing such as CMA, phone calls, final walk through, and the like that is work.
  3. You answer questions related to work or service- if you are in linkedin answering questions about the market, finding jobs, or referring people in your network that is work. If you are on facebook checking out pictures of the latest party you missed well…. you get the point.
  4. Setting up your facebook to accept feeds from your blog - as long as it is your real estate blog you are all set keep up the good work.
  5. Putting pictures of the latest listing you took or showings you had- great way to let people know what is out there. Post them on facebook and create a real estate album that people can see what you are up to.

Social networking can still be fun and enjoyable and still get work done but you need to make sure to actually get things done. In the recent CD we did with Marc Jannone, Hollywood Actor, real estate broker, and serial entrepreneur, we discuss all of these things and you will be working when you listen to it.
