Social networking is getting the same “buzz” that blogging received just a couple of years ago.  Does this mean you should abandon your blog or website in favor of social networking?

Of course not!

Social networking for real estate is one more tool in your arsenal for total domination online.  One of the best aspects about social networking is that you can connect your blog and website with many of the popular networks to share all of the fresh information you are already doing.

For many real estate agents, social networking, represents just “one more thing to do” in an already busy day.  I mean, after all, who has time to be doing 30+ updates a day or commenting on everyone’s profile?  The reality is that too many people are wasting time and they are missing the “work” part of networking.

To get the most from your social networking efforts it is important to have focus and concentrate on the right activities.  Social networking, like other aspects of marketing online, requires taking proven methods and completing them before moving on to the next task.  Here are 3 methods that you can start doing right now to get more from your activities.

  • 1. Time Block - Time blocking is one of the most important non-technical methods you can implement. All too often I hear how agents have spent their entire morning on Facebook and have no new business to speak of for those 4+ hours. To start off with set aside just 20 minutes in the morning to check in with those in your network. As you grow your network you can add additional times throughout the day, but getting going really only just 20 minutes a day. After you are done with your 20 minutes, shut down the web browsers and get back to your other tasks!
  • 2. Add Value - Sharing the fact that you went to Starbucks may seem like a great way to get going with your networking activities, but why should someone care about that? Whether you are making comments, providing status updates, or just updating your profile make sure each and everything you do adds real value to those in your network. It could be something as small as sharing an article that you found that you found helpful, just make sure it is helpful.
  • 3. Stay Connected - This may sound strange considering the very aspect of social networking involves making connections, but you can certainly lose touch with those in your network. Take time each day to check in with those in your network to see how they are doing and see if they have any problems you can help with. When you can solve problems (especially when you aren’t benefiting) you establish yourself as the “go to” person in your network and your connections will be strong!
